image038 - WWI AVIATION PILOT’S GROUP WITH OUTSTANDING DALLAS STYLE WING – IDENTIFIED!

Price: $2,750.00

Here we have a beautiful framed First World War Aviation insignia grouping that belonged to Captain J. N. Thorp, Jr., who was a member of the U.S. Air Service from 1917 to 1918. The grouping consists of a beautifully hand embroidered aviation “Son in Service” brown felt aviation pennant, a World War I U.S. Victory Medal with bar, “France”, a WWI 1917-1918 New Jersey Victory medal named to Thorp, a set of aviation officer’s wing & prop collar insignia, an AVIATOR’S “Son in Service” pin, a solid bronze 1917 – 1919 World War Victory Medal and a magnificent silver “Dallas” style pilot’s wing. The Son in Service pennant is completely hand embroidered in muti colored cotton thread with the word “Aviation” at the top and the single, blue star “Son in Service” pennant in the center. Below this is an embroidered pilot’s wing and below that is the four blade prop insignia of the Air Service both embroidered in white thread. The “Son in Service” banner is beautifully executed and exhibits exquisite texture and detail to the red field. The “Son in Service” pin features a flying gilt eagle that closely resembles the first very rare “Military Aviator’s” badge. The eagle is holding a single, blue star banner with a bronze “U.S.” below in its talons. The World War I New Jersey Victory Medal is engraved to “Capt.N.J. Thorp, Jr.”. The pilot’s wings are beautifully done in three piece silver on a black backing and with the separately applied gold “U.S.” in the center. The World War I Victory Medal’s ribbon has separated from the suspender within the frame and with the exception of this all insignia remains in excellent condition. This early aviator’s insignia grouping is exceptionally scarce and is truly a thing of beauty to behold.  (#1604)

image039 - WWI AIR SERVICE PILOT’S WING IN HEAVY, PADDED BULLION – CHOICE!

Price: $1,200.00

This is a wonderful First World War Air Service pilot’s wing in bullion. The piece is constructed of multi color gold and silver metallic thread on a dark blue/black wool backing. It is a short and stubby variation of the Air Service pilot’s wing with short, thick wings and a highly three-dimensional central shield. The bullion is nice and heavy and superbly crafted being nicely age toned and without any corrosion or damage. The reverse of the wing is faced with a heavy brown polished cotton type material. The wing has been carefully removed from a tunic and the stitching holes can be clearly seen on the reverse side. This is a beautiful sew-on example that is very thick and with superb detail to the hand done bullion work.  (#1605)

image040 - 2nd DIVISION HELMET WITH INDIAN HEAD PAINTED ON RED CIRCULAR BACKGROUND

Price: $ 325.00

This is a really nice 2nd Infantry Division Model 1917 helmet that has a wonderful hand painted Indian head insignia superimposed over a red circle on the front. This insignia is in excellent condition with only a few very minor nicks and scratches. There are no dents in the helmet at all. The lower section of the chinstrap is broken and missing but the liner is still present, strong, pliable and strongly attached to the helmet. Despite the lack of the chinstrap, it remains a very scarce U.S. World War I helmet nonetheless.
