BRITISH QUEEN’S SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL W/2 BARS TO THE 1ST BORDER REGIMENT – GHOST DATES ON REVERSE
[001271]
$275.00

Here we have a very fine British Victorian Era Queens South Africa Medal with 2 bars awarded to the 1st Border Regiment that remains in excellent condition. The planchet is free from any edge knocks or bruises and exhibits very fine detail. The reverse has the figure of Britannia pointing to the letter “R” in the word “Africa”. Below the wreath that she holds in her right hand can be seen the ghost dates “1899” over “1900”. These were the dates on the original dies that were removed after the 2nd Boer War moved past 1900 and into the years 1901 and 1902. The medal has the bars “Transvaal” and “Cape Colony” attached to the suspender. The bars are affixed by means of the original rivets that remain tight and un tampered with. The medal is impressed in the correct style with the name, “3226 Pte. J. Waters, 1st: Bord: Regt.” Ghost dated examples are rather scarce and this one remains in excellent condition.
